Project 9: Portraits

For this project we were taking fine art and commercial portraits. To do this we experimented with a variety of things including light, color and pose to achieve either a fine art or commercial portrait. I really like how both my commercial and fine art turned out.

Elena (fine art)- I took this photo with one of my film cameras. I'm relatively new to film so I was experimenting with light. I made my friend Elena stand in front of a rocky/muddy wall in my neighborhood. It was sunny but this particular area was shaded and I'm really happy with the soft light sort of effect. I made a shallow depth of field so my friend was in focus but the background wasn't. I also like the lighting a lot because my friend looks like she's almost glowing sort of which I think gives this the fine art effect.

Elena 2 (fine art)- I had my friend stand in front of a mossy wall for this photo. I loved this in color as well the colors were all fairly dark and cohesive except for the flowers they were bright and popped against the green in the background. However, putting this in black and white I thought really set the mood well and made it more dramatic. This one I took at about eight in the morning to experiment with different light through out the day. I really like the soft, early morning light. I also had her remain in this pose while I moved and took different pictures of her.

Elena 3 (fine art)- I had my friend stand in front of the same wall as my previous portrait. I really liked this in color I though that the colors were very interesting and cohesive. I also liked her pose in this one I thought it was very fine art.  Again I thought the soft lighting really worked well for a portrait. I experimented with a lot of different settings and poses but I thought this was one of the more successful ones.

Emma (fine art)- This is another portrait that was taken with a film camera. I love this picture because  even though the light is a bit harsher (about midday in the sun) I think it really captures my friend well. I also really liked the slight blur in this photo I think it makes it feel happy. I also like how it has a very vintage sort of feel. Even though the tone in this photo is very different than my previous fine art photos I really like it and the happy tone it conveys.

Portland fashion (commercial)- For this photo I had my friend sit underneath a red tree. It was early in the day and I knew I liked this  lighting because of my earlier portraits I had taken at this time. I think her pose is very commercial and works well as a magazine color. to edit this I brought up highlights on her face slightly then I brought out the red a little bit.

Pendleton (commercial)- Again I took a picture of my friend, this time in my back yard. It was around midday so the light was harsher but this area was partially shaded which I think gave this photo really nice lighting. I also think her pose is very commercial and since I had her wearing a Pendleton flannel and vest I thought this worked very well as a Pendleton ad.
