Final Portfolio

I have very much enjoyed my year in photography, I have loved learning new shooting techniques and photoshop and light room as well. My favorite projects probably were the grid projects and the magazine. I loved the grids because once I understood how to set them up in light room I found them to be really fun and interesting. I also loved the magazine project because I thought it was really fun and allowed for a lot of creativity. Overall I think this class has helped me develop a love for photography and I'm looking forward to taking the 3-4 class next year.

Project 10: Magazine mock up

For this project we looked to online and print magazines for inspiration for our own magazine, mine is titled "Portland Fashion" and includes two spreads incorporated into one sort of thing called "Dress for the weather you want v. Dress for the weather you have." It also includes four ads and a table of contents page.

Project 9: Portraits

For this project we were taking fine art and commercial portraits. To do this we experimented with a variety of things including light, color and pose to achieve either a fine art or commercial portrait. I really like how both my commercial and fine art turned out.

Elena (fine art)- I took this photo with one of my film cameras. I'm relatively new to film so I was experimenting with light. I made my friend Elena stand in front of a rocky/muddy wall in my neighborhood. It was sunny but this particular area was shaded and I'm really happy with the soft light sort of effect. I made a shallow depth of field so my friend was in focus but the background wasn't. I also like the lighting a lot because my friend looks like she's almost glowing sort of which I think gives this the fine art effect.
Elena 2 (fine art)- I had my friend stand in front of a mossy wall for this photo. I loved this in color as well the colors were all fairly dark and cohesive except for the flowers they were bright and popped against the green in the background. However, putting this in black and white I thought really set the mood well and made it more dramatic. This one I took at about eight in the morning to experiment with different light through out the day. I really like the soft, early morning light. I also had her remain in this pose while I moved and took different pictures of her.
Elena 3 (fine art)- I had my friend stand in front of the same wall as my previous portrait. I really liked this in color I though that the colors were very interesting and cohesive. I also liked her pose in this one I thought it was very fine art.  Again I thought the soft lighting really worked well for a portrait. I experimented with a lot of different settings and poses but I thought this was one of the more successful ones.
Emma (fine art)- This is another portrait that was taken with a film camera. I love this picture because  even though the light is a bit harsher (about midday in the sun) I think it really captures my friend well. I also really liked the slight blur in this photo I think it makes it feel happy. I also like how it has a very vintage sort of feel. Even though the tone in this photo is very different than my previous fine art photos I really like it and the happy tone it conveys.

Portland fashion (commercial)- For this photo I had my friend sit underneath a red tree. It was early in the day and I knew I liked this  lighting because of my earlier portraits I had taken at this time. I think her pose is very commercial and works well as a magazine color. to edit this I brought up highlights on her face slightly then I brought out the red a little bit.
Pendleton (commercial)- Again I took a picture of my friend, this time in my back yard. It was around midday so the light was harsher but this area was partially shaded which I think gave this photo really nice lighting. I also think her pose is very commercial and since I had her wearing a Pendleton flannel and vest I thought this worked very well as a Pendleton ad.

Project 9: Prework

For this project we are going to be taking fine art portraits and commercial portraits. In my research I've noticed there's some overlap in these two but they are also very separate. Both can have funky styling and soft lighting, however I've noticed that the commercial photography seems to "pop" a lot more with lots of vibrant colors. While fine art seems to be less saturated. Commercial photography also highlights the clothing while fine art is more about saying something.

Olga Astratova- (Fine art) I think the desaturated colors and use of props really give this image a cool effect and really work for it. I also like how the colors are all very similar and blend.

Indolence, Jacqueline Roberts- (Fine art) I Think the intense lighting and composition of this photo make it super dramatic and dynamic. I think making this photo black and white works well too.

VOGUE (couldn't find photographer)-  I think the intense lighting highlights the model and the clothing nicely. I also think that the use of props worked well in this photo. I also think the cohesive colors add a nice effect.

VOGUE (couldn't find photographer)- I really like how the styling, composition and lighting give this photo a whimsical tone. The basic background with a compatible color also make this cover work the neutrals with the light blue go together nicely.

Project 8: HDR, Multiple exposures, and Panoramas

For this project we had three different techniques to use while taking our photos: Panorama, HDR and multiple exposures. Each one required us to be steady in our motions and preferably use a tripod.
Curious Cat- (multiple exposures) For this photo I took multiple pictures of my cat while he moved and I held still. I then layered them making each a little less opaque than then next to achieve this effect. I then cropped it and added a few finishing touches on light room.
Farm- (Panorama) This is a panorama I took at my dad's house. I used a tripod to take multiple images then used photoshop to stitch them together seamlessly.

HDR original photo

City- (HDR) This is a photo I took in downtown Portland. I took a few images, changing the exposures each time. I then merged them into HDR pro in photoshop then cropped it and tried to fix up some areas where there was weird pixillation and the colors were off. I liked this because I thought it looked sort of tropical and like a cartoon sketch.

Project 7: Alternative Process Through Digital Means

For this project we had to replicate alternative processes with digital means. We replicated daguerreotype, and cyanotype by adding layers on photoshop. We also downloaded free frames, textures and brushes from the internet to achieve these effects. To replicate the daguerreotype and cyanotype I added multiple layers and experimented with the opacity and blending modes. I also used different types of brushes to make backgrounds and help blend things in.

Snowy Rose- Original                              Snowy Rose- Daguerreotype

    Squash- Cyanotype                                Squash -Original

                                        Daisy-Original                                   Daisy- Daguerreotype

Project 6: Surrealism

For this project we took photos then transformed them in photoshop, adding layers, cutting out, experimenting with blending modes and transferring images to create a surreal effect. I was inspired by older surrealist artist like Salvador Dali and newer artist who create photos with a similar effect. I was drawn to the simplicity of so many of these surreal paintings.
Flowers on the mind- For this photo I was inspired by photos by Erin Chase. She took landscapes and put them where people's faces should be, I liked this idea but I transformed it to make it my own. To achieve this effect I erased my friends face and the background behind her. I filled in the negative space with black then added the flowers and erased the parts of her hair that covered them.  I then re- cut out her body to make it a new layer so it was easier to erase and fix how the flowers look. I also duplicated the flower photo many times to get this look. I then added a photo of flowers I took in Colorado and made it less opaque to get the texture. I also brushed on black and blur to blend everything together nicely.

Lucille- For this one I was inspired by the more complicated aspect of surrealism. I liked the idea of all these images coming together to make a photo collage. I used the magnetic lasso tool mostly to cut out various objects and shapes then layered them. To achieve this surreal effect I experimented with blending modes to get a dream-like feel. All of the photos in this image I took.

Surrealism

Surrealism was a cultural movement that started in the 1920's and continued through out the 1900's. Surrealist painters often portrayed dream-like scenes, they would develop painting techniques to allow the subconscious to express itself. These paintings would often portray illogical and unnerving scenes; Created from everyday object combined to make a new creature. One major artist during the surrealist movement was Salvador Dali.

The persistence of memory- Salvador Dali.

Swans Reflecting Elephants- Salvador Dali

Another influential painter during the surrealist movement was Rene Margritte. He was Belgian surrealist painter. He was known for clever and thought provoking paintings.

The son of Man- Rene Margritte
The mysteries of the horizons- Rene Margritte.

Project Four: Diptychs and Triptychs

For this part of this project we had to create diptychs and triptychs, a collection of two or three photos
that are viewed as one and have a relationship which each other. We also created a series of kaleidoscope images, where we combined four images and edited them in photoshop.
Dancing orchids- This is made up of three different photos I took of orchids in my house, I loved the lighting and the contrast between the black background. I like the contrast of the background with the orchids vibrant color.
Eyes- One photo I cropped to make it match up and create one image. I like the contrast of his bright blue eyes against the neutral colors of the photo.

Fish- a series of photos I took in Bali, Indonesia. I like this triptych I think it's sort of eerie. I went back and forth between color and black and white but ultimately settled on color.

Cat- A diptych of my cat behind a curtain, I loved the color and glow this photo has.
Pike's Place- A few photos I took while in Seattle, I like how it shows the activity throughout the market, in the second photo I tried to draw the focus away from the people on lightroom and photoshop it didn't work super well but I still like these two photos together.
Old Faithful- A triptych I made of three photos that I took at yellowstone national park earlier this year.
Skiers- Two different photos I took at timberline lodge of skiers on a ski lift. I used an old preset to make the sky yellow.
The city- A kaleidoscope image made up of a photo I took downtown, I rotated the layers and added filters to get this effect.
Autumn- A kaleidoscope image I made from a photo I took of a tree on my street.
Lights-I love this kaleidoscope I think it turned out really interesting, and I like how the lights combined to make little green hearts, I just think that's cute.

Project four: Contrast and Balance.

For this project we had to shoot photos that fell under five categories: Strong contrast in color, scale, and texture and photos representing radial balance and symmetrical balance. My favorite is my photo of orchids that represent a strong contrast in color.

Orchids- Strong contrast in color. I took this photo in my house,  the background is my T.V. to get rid of the reflections on the T.V. I brushed on low exposure till it was dark.

Yellow-Strong contrast in texture. I took this photo on my balcony, I like the contrast in texture from the yellow moss and the metal railing.
Flag- Contrast in scale. A photo I took at timberline lodge this break, I like the contrast in scale between the flag and the mountains.

Reflection- Symmetrical balance. A photo of a mountain I took this summer in Colorado, I love how the reflection creates a mirror image.

Rose- Radial balance.
